Curriculum Overview

5K Kindergarten
Language/Literacy – Rhyming words, opposites, sequence of events, capital and lower case letters, beginning sounds, ending sounds, blending sounds. Complete basal reading program for early independence in decoding, comprehension, writing, and thinking.
Mathematics – Comparisons, patterns, shapes, counting to 100, counting by 5's and 10's, counting objects, arranging the numbers 0-20 in order, addition and subtraction with concrete objects, fractions, measurement, telling time to the hour and half-hour, coins.
Cognitive Skills – Identifying colors; stating full name, birth date, address, telephone number, days of the week, months of the year.
Physical Development – Development of fine motor skills by use of manipulatives, drawing, coloring, painting, drawing lines and circles, tracing shapes, holding/using scissors. Development of large motor skills through walking, running, jumping, hopping, skipping, throwing, catching, kicking, bouncing.
Social Development – Listening, following directions, working independently, working/playing cooperatively, observing class rules, positive self-concept.
Weekly Enrichment Classes
Computer – Students use age-appropriate educational software programs teaching basic math and language skills. Tenth Planet Literacy, a phonics program, is introduced in 5K with continuous use throughout the school year.
Spanish – Listening and speaking skills, Spanish songs and rhymes, conversational vocabulary (colors, numbers, animals, family, home, weather, school, food), Spanish customs and culture.
Library – Story time; listening and viewing skills; story discussion; introduction of library terminology; care and organization of library materials; weekly book check-out; library skills reinforced with audiovisual materials, puppets, fingerplays, and songs.
Music – Sing, move, dance, and play rhythm instruments to music; learn age-appropriate elements of music; ready rhythms; learn Chapel songs and seasonal songs; prepare for performance on Mead Hall Sundays, at the Christmas program, and on May Day.
Physical Education – Creative movement; cooperative games; self-confidence through skills mastery; sportmanship; long-rope jumping skills; throwing, catching, kicking, and skipping skills.
Sacred Studies – The Godly Play curriculum uses story figures and art materials to allow students to experience Bible stories, their characters and themes. The church calendar is introduced.
